On May 2, 2005, Alberta Environment launched Sort It Out! in collaboration with Access TV, the City of Edmonton, and the Beverage Container Management Board. The program was designed as an educational resource package for Alberta students and teachers, using Edmonton’s waste management system as a real-world example to illustrate best practices in recycling and disposal.
Between September 2005 and February 2006, approximately 1,070 teaching kits were distributed through the project’s website, SortItOut.ca. These kits provided lesson plans, interactive materials, and multimedia tools to help classrooms explore topics such as recycling, composting, and responsible waste management.
The initiative quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach. Sort It Out! earned the Canadian New Media Award for Excellence in Learning, highlighting its impact as a digital education tool. It was also nominated for an Emerald Award, which celebrates environmental leadership in Alberta, and the accompanying DVD received a nomination for an Alberta Film and Television Award for Best New Media Production.
